Aaaaaannnnnnd So We're Back!

Veggie's back with a brand new recipe!

Corn Maque Choux, or, Creole Spicy Corn

It's been 5 years and several countries now that we have eaten our way through ;) and we've decided to come back to the home discussion: meat vs veggies. Stay tuned as the veggie fan posts her favorite dishes and the meatatarian shows you her preferred sizzlers!

Eco Adventure: Rules of Food Acquisition

An important first step is to define what "local" means.

Local (2 definitions)
1.) store within walking distance of residence
2.) food grown within rural city limits

During our travels to various markets, it has become necessary to designate a food rating system.

***** (5 Stars): within walking distance and grown/produced within parish (county) limits.
**** (4 Stars): within walking distance and grown/produced within state limits.
*** (3 stars): within walking distance and grown/produced within 500 miles of Shreveport/Bossier City.
** (2 stars): within walking distance, but grown/produced outside of 500 miles of S/BC.
* (1 star): outside of walking distance and grown outside of 500 miles.

When THIS Shit's Hittin' the Fan

We've decided to take 2 weeks to complete this project. The first week will give us time to hunt down and acquire local foods and local stores. The second week is when the actual experiment will transpire.

From 3/9/09 to 3/15/09 we located local stores and their contents. We found that foods were more readily availible within 500 miles of S/BC if they were in local chain stores. We decided that walking to local chain stores would be better for our carbon footprint than driving across town to find a local foods store. Hittin' up the local Wally World is totally out of the question.

From 3/16/09 to 3/22/09 we will be conducting our experiment. Yeah. We went grocery shopping already. Fun stuff. Details about the food labels/price/location in a future blog.
